This is by far one of my favourite places to hang out in Barcelona. So peaceful and beautiful yet so full of history. Not many people know of it and those looking for it may get lost in the process. But once you find it you'll know why it's my favourite place. Here's some history I found about the plaza: The common tale goes like this: the holes all over the facade of the church were from the bullets of Anarchist execution squads who were lining up and shooting down priests against the church. However, this is not true. The famous story was a cover up by the Franco government (surprise surprise). In fact, on January 30th, 1938 a bomb fell on the plaza killing 153 people, most of whom were displaced orphaned children from Madrid. Here is a video of a man who remembers well exactly what happened and sets the record straight. Plaza Sant Felip Neri is one of the Barcelona plazas with the most controversial and mystical history. | |
